A respected educator Soloff appears as guest soloist at universities and high schools around the country. For this work, he utilizes arrangements by his mentor Gil Evans’ along with other unique charts including an Ellington medley as well as treatments of his own originals. He has been on the faculty of the Manhattan School of Music for nearly 20 years and has been an adjunct faculty member at Julliard and New School. His workshops are tailored to the specific needs and ideas of his students.

Soloff’s clinics revolve around two themes, first Inspiration and then Technique:
“It’s important for me to discover what motivates each student to study and perform,” explains Soloff. “I like to uncover what drives young players and utilize that information to explore what a particular group may need during my instruction. I instigate an intensive question and answer session so I am certain to hit upon points that are of interest and most pertinent to those in attendance.”

To illustrate the combination of musical inspiration and technique, Soloff employs both performance and lecture:
“I attempt to develop a comfortable rapport when speaking to a group of student players, with terms they can easily understand. And I play a lot. For me, demonstration is always the best communicator. I remember what my teacher Adolph Herseth (principle trumpet for the Chicago Symphony) told me, ‘one note is worth a 1,000 words.’ ”
